Real Brides: Eilidh

Hallo everyone

I’m really delighted to welcome beautiful Gioia Mia bride, Eilidh to my blog. She’s written about her wedding style, choosing the dress and deciding on what jewellery and accessories to wear for her big day…lots of invaluable advice on the planning process!

white

How would you describe your wedding style?

Relaxed, classic and understated.

And that goes for the general feel of the day, the décor, the ceremony, the outfits and the jewellery!

I was never going to be a bride who spent thousands of pounds on her dress or accessories but I still wanted them to be special and reflect my style  – and though the wedding décor in our venue was minimal we were in an awesome building (St Andrews in the Square, Glasgow) so we were never going to need a huge amount of flowers and decorations as the gilding, panels and stained class in the building was more than enough (though I did love the fairy lights provided by the venue, they were brilliant).

ET8A2873

So this classic style, of the building and the overall setting, was key and that was also reflected in what I wore (lots of ivory lace and a little bit of sparkle, but only a little!) and what Andrew wore (kilt and tweed jacket with thistle buttonhole). But our style was definitely classic but not too preened to perfection – certainly understated and relaxed!

We wanted people to feel comfortable and relaxed throughout the whole day, without too many formalities, and I hope we encouraged this just by the way we acted – we were both very relaxed and smiley all day!

white

white

At what stage in the whole wedding planning process did you start thinking about your jewellery and accessories?

We got engaged at the end of August 2013 and our wedding date was 9th August 2014 so the wedding planning was confined to just under 1 year which was a relatively short period of time for what ended up being quite a big wedding of about 150 guests.

We only looked at 2 venues and decided St Andrews in the Square was exactly what we were looking for – and we had this booked within a couple of months of the engagement, and over the first few weeks of the engagement I had been browsing through wedding dresses online. I really didn’t know what I was after when I started looking – I know some people know exactly what style of dress they want but I’d never really thought about it in great detail, or so I thought…It quickly became clear during these online searches that I knew exactly what I didn’t want, so that helped immensely to narrow down the dress options!

I knew I didn’t want anything too big, or anything that I couldn’t dance in properly. We had a ceilidh at the wedding and our ‘first dance’ wasn’t a slow, romantic number but a very fast set dance – strip the willow – with all of the bridal party and immediate family members in the set dancing with us, so I knew I wanted a dress I could swing about in, and flat shoes (I’m not a big heels person).

ET8A4033

I ended up finding what appeared to be my ideal dress in Debenhams! I was sceptical at first,  it couldn’t be that easy surely…and I expected the lace to maybe not look as nice in person as it did online so I ordered it ‘click and collect’ and went in to try it on myself on a Thursday night after work, assuming it would look awful but it would at least be a start in the wedding dress search to work out what suited me and what didn’t suit me.

Had I known this was going to be my actual wedding dress I probably would have invited my bridesmaids and mum to come with, and maybe smuggled in some champagne! And certainly not gone in on a Thursday night late after work, but I really didn’t expect the dress to be that nice! But of course, it was, and it only needed taken up an inch and nipped in at the waist to be perfect. And it was a serious bargain so allowed for more money to be spent on other lovely wedding things like being able to pay to have more guests on the actual wedding day!

So, once I had chosen this dress I knew I wasn’t going to have a veil (as I loved the back of my dress and I decided I’d probably end up discarding the veil straight after the ceremony anyway so there was no point), but I definitely wanted to have something in my hair as I’d decided hair-up would go best with the style of the dress and a little bit of sparkles or pearls would help to make the hair-style that little bit more special for the day.

ET8A4136

The jewellery stage came once I had the dress and also once I had decided on the best hairstyle for the dress – I couldn’t have chosen jewellery earlier than that and I’m glad I didn’t.  For example, the neckline of my dress was quite high and round and a necklace would have looked odd or too much, so I knew I just wanted simple stud earrings, maybe a bracelet and something in my hair.

I had originally thought I might just have a small hair slide or a very plain hair band (with just tiny pearls) but decided to go see Sonia and try some things on.

This was early 2014 – with the wedding coming up in August, so it was a few months before the wedding that I began to think about jewellery and accessories, which was perfect because it gave Sonia time to make something unique especially for me!

white

white

How did you decide what accessories to wear?

A few months before the wedding I came into Sonia’s studio to have a chat and try on some different pieces to work out what I liked and what wasn’t for me.

I originally thought just a simple headband would be perfect for my look – very dainty with tiny pearls – and this was something I’d seen in Sonia’s collection before.  I tried it and it looked lovely but I also decided to try all sorts of other styles just for fun – this was when I realised I liked some aspects of one headband  and some aspects of another – so Sonia said it was no problem and we could just combine the two aspects into one new design for me!

This design ended up being much bigger than I’d originally thought I’d go for, but the stones in the main piece of the headband weren’t too flashy and had a vintage feel to them (Sonia, you’ll be able to explain what is different about the stones in the Helena headband!) so it still felt quite understated, and it went really well with the style of the dress.

ET8A3543

I’d also decided that I wanted to get a gift for my two bridesmaids and felt that a dainty bracelet would be ideal – especially something that they could wear again and wasn’t clearly a piece of wedding jewellery.

Sonia and I had a chat and decided to go for a silver chain bracelet with three small freshwater pearls in different colours of white, blues and greys.  Sonia made a bracelet for each of the bridesmaids and one for me too – I handed them over the night before the wedding and we all wore them on the day.

white

white

What did you enjoy most about having your jewellery and accessories designed and made for you?

For the bracelets, I loved that it was our own design that Sonia and I came up with ourselves and which was really unique, not something you could get in the shops.

The bridesmaids loved the personal touch of the gift and I really liked that we all had something that was of a similar style but with each one that little bit different (my bracelet had a large white pearl in the middle with grey and blue either side, and the bridesmaids’ versions were variations on this with the colours switched round).

For the headband, I loved how we were able to tweak the design and, again, put together something unique that was exactly what I wanted, with no compromises!  It was brilliant to be able to book a time with Sonia and come to the studio, try on all different styles (without feeling pressured for time like you might do in a busy high street shop).  And Sonia was brilliant at reading me and noticing when I wasn’t too keen on a style I was trying on, and offering up different options or ways that we could tweak it – again something you just don’t get when you go into a shop and they have a limited selection of what’s on offer to you.

white

ET8A5200

white

Is there any advice about jewellery and accessories that you would give a bride to be?

Don’t leave it till the last minute because it takes time for something unique to be designed and handmade especially for you and you want to make sure you get it in time for the big day!

And allow yourself lots of time to try plenty of different styles, even if they’re not what you think you are after – I ended up going for something much bigger and sparklier than I had originally planned but I think it looked awesome and I was so glad I did.  I got so many compliments on the day!

I’d recommend waiting until you’ve decided on your dress and hairstyle as it will have a big impact on things – like I said, I originally assumed that of course I would wear a necklace but the neckline of my dress worked much better without it, and this allowed me to put much more sparkle elsewhere without it becoming too overpowering or busy.

Eilidh and Andrew also had a videographer, you can see their rather lovely video here.

Real Brides: Emma

Hallo everyone!

I’m really delighted to feature another of the beautiful brides that I have made accessories for.

Emma commissioned a tiara, having already bought her dress and decided on what jewellery she was going to wear on her wedding day. Over to Emma to talk about how she brought her look together, and about the commission process.

At what stage in the whole wedding planning process did you start thinking about your jewellery and accessories?

I had always really wanted a tiara as a bride. There’s not many other occasions you can justify wearing one really, so I wanted to make the most of it! But I really started thinking more about what I wanted once the dress was decided on.

How did you decide what accessories to wear?

The dress really dictated that. My dress was relatively simple with only one area of detail so my options for accessories were bountiful! My now husband bought me a pearl necklace/choker and matching bracelet for the Christmas before the wedding and my tiara and earrings were chosen to match this.

Emma came round to my studio one afternoon with her mum. She brought the beautiful jewellery that her husband-to-be had given her, and told me about the dress she had chosen and the colour scheme for her wedding.

She knew that she wanted to wear a tiara, and had really liked a headpiece that I had made previously, which she had seen.

We then spent a while picking out the most beautiful selection of rose quartz, Swarovski pearls and crystals, and freshwater pearls in shades of blush, delicate pinks and mauves that matched Emma’s colour scheme.

I made Emma’s tiara over the course of a couple of days, taking great care over the structure of her tiara, its shape and where each of the pearls and crystals were placed, so that the finished piece seemed to have a feeling of effortless grace and delicacy.

What did you enjoy most about having your tiara designed and made for you?

I loved the whole process! I’m quite artistic, so the afternoon spent picking out beads and pearls and colours was right up my street! Myself and mum were totally buzzing with enthusiasm after we left that day. Then there was the excitement as to what our eclectic choices and discussions on themes would provide as an end result…and the end result did not disappoint! The tiara was exactly what I had hoped for and matched with my dress, my other accessories and the theme of the wedding – it’s beautiful. The best part is that I have a one-off piece that nobody else will have.

Is there any advice about jewellery and accessories that you would give a bride to be?

Look around for ideas and take your time to decide what you really want. Don’t leave it until the last minute and you will enjoy the experience more. Although not as expensive as diamonds, my accessories have so much more worth to me than a little diamond could ever mean.

‘I just wanted to say thank you so much for the gorgeous tiara you made for my wedding. It was just perfect – tied in perfectly with my dress and other jewellery. I got so many compliments throughout the day on the tiara – just so delighted with it.’

Thank you so much, Emma, for sharing your thoughts and experiences with my readers. And thank you too for commissioning me. I really loved meeting you and making your tiara for you!

Gioia Mia loves: Flossy and Dossy

Hallo everyone!

I was really delighted when Wendy, of Flossy and Dossy, asked me to contribute some jewellery and accessories for a photo shoot she was organising for her new collection.

I was even more excited when she agreed to let me feature her collection and the shoot on my blog. And here it is – a perfectly-formed collection of the most beautiful dresses, made with lace, tulle, sequins, silks and satins. Pretty details abound: illusion lace and polka dot overlays; capped sleeves; scalloped trims and satin-bound edges; large silk bows; delicately beaded sashes and motifs. Which one’s your favourite?!

Gioia Mia loves: Pamper and Polish

Hallo everyone!

I’ve always loved watching makeup artists and hair stylists at work: they have such an incredible eye for choosing and blending just the right colours, and for the most flattering styles; they work so quickly and precisely; and the very best have the loveliest, easiest manner with people.

I really enjoyed watching Lesley, of Pamper and Polish, at work and absolutely loved the different looks she created for our model, Eilidh. I thought that it might be interesting to ask Lesley how she created Eilidh’s look, what products she used, and why she picked certain colours or products.

white

Over to Lesley:

I use Jane Iredale mineral cosmetics because the full range of make up is kind to the skin – it’s also referred to as the ‘skincare make-up’. It is free from oils, talc, FD&C dyes, synthetic preservatives, parabens and synthetic fragrances. It is water resistant, long lasting and allows your skin to breathe, therefore lovely to wear!

My model Eilidh had lovely, flawless skin. I decided to keep her make up natural to enhance her own natural beauty as she was modelling delicate, handmade pieces of jewellery.

I applied some primer to the skin to increase the luminosity of the skin, followed by an application of ‘Liquid Minerals’ foundation. This foundation is light reflecting with the mineral spheres suspended in aloe vera gel and lavender flower water, so very refreshing to wear on your skin.

No sharp contouring or concealers were applied. I used a soft peach blusher with a little highlighter above the brow bone.

whitee

I chose peach and a mid grey/brown (‘Crushed Ice’) eyeshadow colour to accentuate Eilidh’s eye colour, followed by a soft brown eye liner and black mascara.

A brow powder was used to sculpt and enhance the brows naturally, which also helps to accentuate the eye area. Soft gold points at the inner corner created a wide-eyed look.

Lipgloss completed the make up look with one of the new colours available, ‘Sangria’.

Lastly, I used a light spritz of D2O hydration spray all over the face which sets the minerals, hydrates and plumps the skin.

The jewellery and hair pieces are delicate pieces and light to wear, so I decided to keep Eilidh’s shoulder-length hair soft and natural so that the hairstyles wouldn’t distract your eyes away from the head pieces.

I put a soft curl into Eilidh’s hair by sectioning the hair into small sections and curled it using a medium sized curling wand.

I then ran my fingers through the curls using a little Schwarzkopf serum called ‘Osis’. You only need a tiny bit of this. By doing this, I was able to pull out and soften the curls to then create my styles.

I finished and set the styles using Paul Mitchell fast drying sculpting spray which holds really well, but also brushes out easily.

Online Boutique: shop jewellery

Hallo everyone!

Ever since I designed and made my first commission, I’ve always enjoyed making jewellery to go with my accessories…sometimes all it takes is a little something to bring together a look and finish it off.

For the ‘Arco’ shoot (which you can see here), I picked out three different necklace and earring sets, to go with the different looks we created. There are simple pearl drops, short pearl and crystal ones and longer, more eye-catching ones too.

Each piece is handmade by myself, in sterling silver, using Swarovski pearls and crystals. And each piece can be made it a whole range of different colours, shades and tones, ranging from ethereal, barely-there crystal to classic whites and ivories; from sophisticated combinations of nude and pastel tones to dramatic statements in bolder shades.

All pieces come beautifully gift wrapped. Perfect for a bride, as a gift for a bridesmaid – or even as a birthday gift for a friend or family member!

You’ll be able to see all of these pieces listed over the next week or so on my new online boutique here.

As ever, feel free to arrange a time to come and see any of these pieces in person, or to have a chat about designing your own jewellery. My studio is in the very centre of Glasgow, and I have daytime, evening and weekend appointments available.

I’ll be adding more earrings, necklaces and bracelets to my online boutique over the course of this next year, so be sure to add my shop to your Etsy favourites to keep up to date!

Online Boutique: shop the ‘Arco’ collection

Hallo everyone

This year is a special one for me: Gioia Mia is ten years old!

To celebrate, I’m finally launching my online boutique. You can now order online here, from the comfort of your own sofa, at any time of day or night.

My lovely new boutique offers the same high degree of choice and customisation that meeting me in my studio does: you can order my pieces in (quite literally) hundreds of different combinations of Swarovski pearl and crystal colours, and in either silver-tone or gold-tone metal.

All the jewellery is also available to buy, and can be made in co-ordinating colours, making it perfect for brides, maids, mums or as a special gift for a friend or family member – or even for yourself! I’ll be featuring some pieces separately in the next post, so do pop by again and have a look.

As always, you’re most welcome to make an appointment to come and see these pieces in person – and to try them on too. My studio is in the centre of Glasgow, and I have daytime, evening and weekend appointments available.

The first collection I’m featuring is ‘Arco’. The gently curving arches in each of the pieces are filled with a mixture of Swarovski pearls and crystals. Each piece is, as always, meticulously crafted and beautifully finished. The shapes are modern and clean, but work perfectly with vintage-style dresses and fabrics. The effect is delicate, understated and very feminine – as in the photographs below.

I hope you enjoy the collection, and be sure to add my shop to your Etsy favourites, as I’ll be adding more pieces very soon.

Birds of a Feather photoshoot. Designing the jewellery and accessories

Hallo everyone!

One of the many reasons I love working on photoshoots, is that they are an excellent opportunity to experiment with different materials, techniques and designs  – one that might not be so readily available at other times. I knew straight away that our ‘Birds of a Feather’ photoshoot would be such an opportunity.

Wendy (Flossy and Dossy) and I met up very early on in the whole process, after the idea of the shoot and the birds theme had been decided. We talked about colours, styles, fabrics and designs. Wendy gave me swatches of the fabrics she had chosen to work with so that I could explore colours and combinations of colours, and over the following weeks we finalised the details that would have a bearing on my own work (such as necklines).

I thought for some time about how I would treat the theme. I knew from the very beginning that I didn’t want to interpret it too literally, and that I wanted to create the feeling of something quite ethereal and light. So I began to explore the idea of nests, of tangles of twigs, and of leaves. I chose delicate, natural (and sometimes also fragile) materials to carry this idea through: crystals, tulle, skeleton leaves and pearls.

The design process distilled some of the initial ideas into very essential forms: the nest idea became two circles within each other; and the tangled twigs idea became an artfully arranged three-dimensional spray of crystals and pearls; the leaf became like a gently curving bird’s wing on a light-as-air structure.

I designed and made the long earrings to contrast with the circular and compact forms I had been exploring in the headpieces and to complement the necklines in the dresses.

Such pared-down forms drew even more attention to the proportions of each piece, the quality of the materials and the finishing. As always, I took pains to ensure that all the different elements were of the highest standard.

Real brides: Estelle

Hallo everyone!

I’m really delighted to feature another of the beautiful brides that I have designed and made jewellery and accessories for.

I first met Estelle a while before she got engaged, and got to know her quite well before her fiancé proposed. I was really touched when she asked if I could make her jewellery and accessories for her big day. Over to Estelle to talk about her commission:

At what stage in the whole wedding planning process did you start thinking about your jewellery and accessories?

When I tried on wedding dresses, the ladies in the shop got me to try a few tiaras with dresses with got me thinking about it.

white

How did you decide what accessories to wear?

I always knew I wanted quite subtle, delicate jewellery, but didn’t decide properly until I met with Sonia from Gioia Mia.

I met Estelle one afternoon to find out about the dress she had chosen, and to hear about any ideas she already had for her jewellery and accessories. She already knew that she didn’t want to wear anything on a traditional tiara band, so decided on a comb.

We had a look through some sample freshwater pearls and Swarovski crystals, and Estelle picked out some oval freshwater pearls in white and the most beautiful combination of emerald green, eau de nil, and opaque, milky-white crystals.

I decided to use the coloured Swarovski crystals in her comb, but not her jewellery, thinking that the jewellery should the more understated of the two. So I used the freshwater pearls and the opaque, milky-white crystals for Estelle’s necklace and earring set, in a very subtle, repeating pattern of pearls and crystals.

Estelle’s comb I kept quite low (so as not to upset the balance of her dress, veil, hairstyle and jewellery) making sure the gently curving shape framed and complemented the shape of her face. I gave it a less formal feel by not making it perfectly symmetrical, but by giving it a balanced asymmetry.

Estelle also commissioned some clasps for each of her four bridesmaids to wear.  She was unsure how each of them was going to style their hair for her big day, and wasn’t too concerned with them all having the same hairstyle. So after looking at various options, we thought a clasp for each of them would give them the most flexibility, in terms of how each of them could wear it.

I used some of the same freshwater pearls and Swarovski crystals that i had used for Estelle’s comb and jewellery to tie the designs together.

Is there any advice about jewellery and accessories that you would give a bride to be?

Definitely to get it made for you as it is so personal then. Also, to be make sure you go for what you really want. Ladies at a wedding show I attended were trying to talk me into getting big tiaras when that was never what I was after. The comb I ended up getting through Gioia Mia was just so beautiful and perfect for me!

white

What did you enjoy most about having your jewellery and accessories designed and made for you?

The fact that is was so personal to me. Sonia took so much time to meet with me to really discuss what woul d suit me and be to my taste and she also went to see my wedding dress and used some of the detail to match with my jewellery. This was all so touching and made my jewellery unique to me!!
